Preparing for your spiritual direction session

The time you spend with your spiritual director is time you are giving to yourself and to God. Provide yourself the space – mentally, emotionally and spiritually – to sit with your spiritual director and explore your relationship with God and what God is calling you to in your day-to-day life.

Sitting in prayer

Before you meet with your spiritual director, reflect back since your last session and thinking about any “God movements”. Where have you seen God flowing in your day-to-day, speaking with you in all things, not just the big issues. Below are some questions whether it is your first spiritual direction session or your hundredth.

  • What is happening in my life at this moment?
  • Where do I need to understand God’s meaning or purpose for this moment?
  • Is there any reading, phrase or words that has struck me recently – they just landed with me differently?
  • Is there any situation or issue in my relationship with others – family, friends, colleagues – which are hindering my relationship with God or my faith?
  • What stirrings do I have which feel like “something else”? An invitation?

Take a moment to jot down your reflections. You don’t need to write a dissertation or a flowery journal entry. This is simply a conversation between you and God. Bring your jottings to your session and walk your spiritual director through them. Together, we’ll look for how God is moving in the little to large, and what might be the next right step in your relationship with the Almighty.
